Smart Food Storage Containers

Gloware is a smart food storage concept that reimagines how we store and monitor our food. Designed to reduce waste and bring awareness to what’s inside your fridge.  Gloware containers sync seamlessly with a companion mobile app. Each container tracks freshness, temperature, and expiration dates in real time

01
Discovery & Research

The Problem
Every year, roughly one-third of all food produced globally is wasted.
That’s about 1.3 billion tons of food!

This Affects...
The Environment: Wasted food produces methane as it decomposes in landfills, fueling climate change.
Natural Resources
: Large amounts of water, energy, and land are used to grow food that never gets eaten.
The Economy: Food waste costs the global economy hundreds of billions of dollars every year.
Food Insecurity:  While perfectly fine food is thrown away, millions worldwide are starving.
You: All of these problems affect your wallet, your environment, and your future!

How Much Food Do We Waste?
“ More than 80 percent of Americans discard perfectly good food because they misunderstand expiration labels. ”
- RTS: Food Waste in America

The hard truth is that we need to be more mindful of the food we waste. How could we keep better track of the food we buy so it doesn't spoil? The change could start in our kitchens.

Concept

Design a food storage container that connects to a mobile app on your phone.
This container will be equipped with sensors to track freshness, temperature, and expiration dates.
The mobile app will alert the consumer about the current status of their food.

Who could benefit from smart food containers?

The Environment

If 20% of households used a system to prevent food waste, we’d keep millions of tons of organic matter out of landfills annually.
Workplaces

Could help manage the messy fridge in the breakroom no one wants to deal with.
Elderly People

Seniors would benefit from reminders on what is going on in their fridge.
College Students

Students living on or off campus could use the help in managing their food on a budget.
Families

Maintaining a clean fridge usually falls behind on the list of chores in households. a simple reminder could fix that.

Average Person

An average person working 40 hours a week sometimes needs reminders to stay on track.

02
Ideation

Concept 1
  • A waterproof LED screen clip that attaches to the lid of the bowl.
  • The clip changes color (green, yellow, red) based on how long the food has been inside the container.
  • When you put your food inside the container, you would press the black button on the clip to start the cycle.
  • The clip would be on the standard 5 day timer and cycling through based on the days.

Notes
Problems with concept 1:
  • The container would be very bulky with extra parts
  • Out of sight, out of mind in the fridge.
  • Needs a charging source.
  • Unable to tell what type of food is in the container.
  • Gives inaccurate data to the consumer.
What to change:
  • Get rid of the clip and integrate technology into the lid itself.
  • Solar charging lid?
  • Design a mobile app that would connect to the product.
  • The app will have the ability to figure out what type of food is in the container.

Stacking Design
GloWare needs to help with the clutter, not add to it.
We have a sleek feature in our lid design that allows you to stack different sizes together to save cabinet or fridge space.

How Gloware Works

Step by Step

  1. Take your GloWare container out of the cabinet.
  2. Take the lid off, and place the food into the container.
  3. Put the lid back on and press the start button.
